NEW PLATE ROLLING MILL INSTALLED IN MADISON

January 2010

MADISON, IL, USA - Prior to the acquisition of Revere, Magnesium Elektron North America (MENA) did not have the capability to roll material in plate form.  The Revere assets included a 48 wide, 4 high plate mill that became of great use when the division started processing aluminium alloy-2004 for Superform in 2008.  Slab cast in the UK was shipped to Madison, IL for hot rolling and then finished rolled on the mill located in Plymouth, MA.  The decision to close the Plymouth plant necessitated the relocation of the mill to the Madison facility, which occurred in 2009.

The mill relocation was completed in September, and included significant modernisation. The mill will have additional advantages beyond just the processing of aluminium alloy-2004.  It will be invaluable for alloy development purposes including the rolling of WE43 plate used in ballistic testing for armour plate applications.  The mill will serve as a tremendous asset as MENA continues to pursue the expansion of the wrought side of the business.
