MENA DEVELOPS PRODUCT FOR THE RAYTHEON EKV/GMD MISSILE

1 June 2007

Magnesium Elektron North America (MENA), Luxfer's wrought magnesium plant in Madison, Illinois has teamed up with Raytheon Missile to replace a beryllium sunshade with a magnesium sunshade on its EKV/GMD missile.

This missile is part of the new Ballistic Missile Defence System being developed by the Department of Defense to intercept and destroy long-range ballistic missiles during the midcourse phase of their flight, before re-entry into the earth's atmosphere.

Machining of the prototype is complete and test flights should start in the next 3 to 4 months. If all tests go well the new component should start full production by the end of 2007.
